Paphos History

You may be wondering how Paphos in Cyprus developed into an amazing tourist attraction throughout its years. Paphos history is filled with rich culture, various religious beliefs, as well as several ups and downs.

The Paphos we came to know now is actually the New Paphos, othertimes called Nea Paphos. The Old Paphos village was founded in the fourth century B.C. and it has become a capital of western Cyprus back then when Salamis, another town, began to decline. For eight centuries, the Old Paphos began to thrive however it was destroyed by a massive earthquake in the twelfth century B.C. thus the need for relocation occurred.

Even before the town of Paphos was relocated, the worship for Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, was practiced all around town. Paphos is said to be the place where Aphrodite was born and the Greeks agree that she has landed on Paphos when she rose from the sea. Aphrodite’s vast temple remains one of the most favorite tourist attractions in Paphos. It has been rebuilt and restored throughout history by people who are dedicated in ancient architectural designs. However, the only things left of Aphrodite’s temple are huge foundation walls forming a vast circumference of the temple.

Paul of Tarsus, otherwise known as St. Paul, arrived in Cyprus around forty five A.D. and through his proclamation of the Word of God, he was lashed and imprisoned in Paphos. However, when he vanquished the evil sorcerer Elymas, the Roman Proconsul back then named Sergius Paulus converted to Christianity. This was where Paul was known greatly that his former name Saul was replaced by Paul. This is also where he became an effective leader and had many followers. The people even erected St. Paul’s Pillar in Paphos to recognize his deeds of converting them to Christianity.

The aforementioned historical events helped shape the known Paphos today. After some time, they have experienced decline in economic and population growth as more and more towns in Cyprus were established. It was only until 1974 when they began to regain a rapid economic and population activity growth. This was when the Paphos International Airport was erected as well as investors started putting up the different buildings of independent hotels, villas, apartments, and other entertainment sites all over Paphos.
